Hastings was the first governor general of British India. He began in 1750 as a clerk at the East India Company. In 1761, he was appointed to the Calcutta Council, and in 1769, was made a member of the Madras Council. In 1771, he became governor of Bengal, and in 1774, governor general of India. In 1784, he resigned and returned to England, where he was charged with high crimes and misdemenears. He was impeached in 1787 but, after a long trial, was acquitted in 1795. Heard, Isaac, Sir, 1730-1822

Sir Isaac Heard (1730-1822) was an officer of arms at the College of Arms in London. At age 15, he entered the navy, serving in the Mediterranean and on the African coast. Heard rose through the college to become Clarenceux king of arms in 1780. He was created Garter king of arms in 1784 and knighted in 1786. His first wife, whom he married in 1770, was Katherine Tyler of Boston. She died in 1783, and in 1787 he married Alicia Hayes (d. 1808). He died in the College of Arms in 1822. ...
